mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (rogue)
This morning, I stared into the shaving mirror while performing my daily skin irritation ritual, and remembered someone at Technicon referring to me as one of the con's "elder statesmen". I enjoyed the compliment... but it's still a little weird trying to think of myself that way.

Didn't get to stay in bed any later than 9:30 or so this weekend - too much to do! Happy weekend, though. We were celebrating Starr's graduation from nursing school at the top of her class! I think that excellent things are ahead for her.

My Dad drove up to see me yesterday, and I'm planning to go see my Mom and my sister before long this summer. There's been a bit of distance, because of how wrapped-up I've been in myself lately, and I'm really looking forward to re-connecting with them all this year.

The living-room TV's flipped its power supply, and we're down to watching Good Eats on a 12" portable we had in the bedroom. I was looking at getting an AppleTV in a few weeks, but I suspect I'll be putting that off a bit. One of the reasons I'm so far behind on my TV watching is that a lot of it's on the computer, and I just don't think of my desktop Mac as a media center - more of a creativity, communications, and gaming support device. TV programs are for relaxing in the living room - so, really, that makes me a perfect AppleTV customer. (Another reason I'm behind is that I usually have much better things to do than television. Even really good television. I'm almost to the point of cutting things I like from the DVR schedule that I know I just won't get around to watching. People keep saying things like "you should start watching Heroes!" and I look at my backlog and think "yeah... next year maybe!")

Dave S. will be running his Marvel Super Heroes game tonight. I haven't been able to attend since March, and I can't wait to catch up with everyone. For the last sessions, I'd had to finish at work and fly right over to arrive fashionably late; with my new schedule I can take it a little easier.

My outlook's not too bad for a Monday morning.

New phone now. At first, the RAZR wasn't performing any of the tricks I wanted it to, but I fiddled with it a bit, and now GMail works, and I've figured out a way to get my own ringtones onto it without buying ones from Sprint or purchasing a Bluetooth dongle for the Mac. (I might try to get the dongle anyway, since I can then do calendar synchronizing.)

I also found "One More Time", the first cut off Daft Punk's "Interstella 5555 (The 5tory Of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem)" on YouTube. I'm still deciding whether I like the music (think it's a yes), but the video was throwing me some serious late 80's flashback with its Leiji Matsumoto-y goodness. Gonna have to try to see the whole thing, now.

Speaking of anime, [livejournal.com profile] rattrap gave a good review to Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, which I had just recently heard about on the RDF Underground podcast. The podcasters agree with him that the character designs for the ladies are a bit mammary-focused, but I guess they were shooting for what they felt was an authentic modern anime look. Still, it's supposed to hold up well, and I'll be adding it to my collection when I can swing the cash, even if (like The Sentinels) it uses Alphas instead of Valkyries.

Some cool things about Technicon 23:

Giving [livejournal.com profile] rattrap his combined holiday present for the next several years.
Playing the WoW board game with [livejournal.com profile] jsciv, [livejournal.com profile] meiran, and [livejournal.com profile] candidevoltaire; then buying a copy.
A copy of The Heroic Trio from [livejournal.com profile] kittykatya.
Opening the wrong door and accidentally joining this year's Vile Skit.
Being practically the only character in [livejournal.com profile] vileone's LARP that was exactly what he said he was: no more, no less.
Friday dinner seated between Dwight, [livejournal.com profile] raininva, and Christy.
Friday night panels that went Most Excellently. (Some details soon in a filtered post, heh heh.)
A Vile Script that forced me to wrestle with [livejournal.com profile] rainbowsaber. (Oh, shucks.)
Helping [livejournal.com profile] southernsinger perform "The Dragon & The Lady" for Holly Lisle.
Late Saturday dinner and great conversation with [livejournal.com profile] meiran.
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] trenn, chown -R us:us yourbase.
Frequent backrubby morale- and energy-boosts from [livejournal.com profile] shrewlet.
Two boxes full of new reading material from the Auction.
Cool artwork from [livejournal.com profile] kittenchan and [livejournal.com profile] ranchonmars.
It's my 20th Technicon.

Some less-cool things about Technicon 23:

It's my 20th Technicon.
Not enough time to be in Whose Con Is It?
Long drives from and to Norfolk.
Not enough quality time with many friends.
My lousy Simon Cowell imitation.
A body that gave out too early on Saturday night. (For once, stomach issues rather than exhaustion.)
Our air mattress developing a hole.
Not enough time for after-con dinner in Blacksburg. (But a good one with Bert & Meche in Salem.)

-----

I'd call TCon 23 a success, for my part. Well done, [livejournal.com profile] nius, and thanks for the good weekend!
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
I have arrived in Blacksburg for Technicon.

At 7:00 pm last night, I left Little Creek Station in the care of Security Officer KayLee (who's going to be pretty durn cheesed at [livejournal.com profile] raininva and me when we return). Norfolk to Blacksburg is a 5-hour trip, or thereabouts... I got in at 4:30 am. Long story.

I should be throughly loopy by tonight. This may make my panel presentations quite interesting.

Getting ready for Technicon! Trying to make sure that outfits are washed, promised digital gifts are completed, and other ducks are in a row. Last night I picked up something I need for one of the panels... heh heh heh.

While I chase my tail, here's Optimus Prime as a real truck.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (passing)
[livejournal.com profile] raininva and I went to see V for Vendetta yesterday. Considering the amount of whining that I'd seen at various 'Net sites, I was surprised to enjoy it a great deal. It never went all stupid on me, and it practically begged for thought and argument about its 'message', rather than blind acceptance.

I'm really looking forward to Technicon. It looks like I'll be a very busy camper that weekend, but that's okay - I won't get bored :)

I'm working my way through my yearly LOTR re-read. I've got a lot of new books on the shelves waiting for me, but I needed the familiar lands of Middle-Earth for a while. I haven't made it a page farther into "Wicked", which tells you how gripping I've found it.

And I'm really done with 40-50 degree temperatures. It needs to get warm, and stay warm.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (magical)
I've always liked Niven's Laws. I don't slavishly agree with them, but they are an excellent source of topics to ponder.

This leads to the fact that I've just deleted a lengthy rant about SF/fantasy fans who, despite entreaties from their favorite authors that they start thinking for themselves, are still want to be told what to think and what to believe. The only thing we humans got that the rest of the animal kindgom didn't is a more complex brain. It's way past time that we as a race consider trying out some of its higher gears, just to see what happens, you know?

Ok, wow, Technicon report, cool. )
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (manic)
Still working on the T-Con report. At least I have my e-mail back.

Felt very good this morning when I got on the road to work. Warm temperatures, a sunny morning, and some good news last night all cheered me up.

I can get a bit manic when I'm in a really good mood. I'll feel like there's no problem I can't handle, and sometimes I get a little foolhardy. But I suppose it's a better state of mind than the "I think you ought to know I'm feeling very depressed" mood I can fall into so easily.

Back to cataloging software. I hate paperwork.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
I have a long Technicon report I'm working on. For now, I'll just say that the sun is shining, the air is warm, and we have ducks and bunnies in our front yard. Yay for spring!

OTOH, Elfie's mailserver is rejecting my password. So I probably have a few days' worth of mail on hold right now. :(

Fwip!

I got a forwarded email about ip addesses today. The subject line was "fwip". This is brought to you by the Easily Amused Association.

I saw the screener for the new Doctor Who this week, and really liked it. The episode was fun, and avoided Fox's mistake of trying to cram too much continuity down a new viewer's throat - though there were a few tips of the hat to we long-term fans. I was going to post some specific opinions behind a spoiler cut, but I can wait until after Technicon to do that. I imagine that TV torrent sites are getting more queries on "rose" right now than the last time "The Bachelor" got pre-empted. I'm looking forward to more!

I've been spending a lot of time lately reading the archives at http://www.randi.org/ - some of the anecdotes are pretty wild. I can't honestly say I'm likely to attain the level of skepticism displayed by Randi or the late Carl Sagan, but I did work out at an early age that there are a lot of charlatans out there waiting to take advantage of anyone they can. I'm a tongue-in-cheek adherent of Discordianism partially because it doesn't want my money and would be disappointed in me if I started doing everything it told me to :)

Part of the fun of being Tech Support here is getting to play legitimately with the Developer Preview of OS X 10.4. Shiny beta plaything!
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (rabbiteer)
The element of Technicon that has stayed with me most this morning is the great pain in my legs from dancing too much too quickly Saturday night. Oh, yes... and I think that next time [livejournal.com profile] raininva and I go to India Garden, we're ordering just bland chicken "tanders" and the garlic "naan" (bread). Our stomachs aren't international enough for much else.

Details of the con )Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nius for putting on a great con - I had tons of fun! I'm already looking forward to [livejournal.com profile] vond's Technicon next year!
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (magical)
I think it's Ken Wright's fault that every time a SCAdian refers to an "autocrat", I picture Optimus Prime with a sword, shield, and crown.

Anyway.

Didn't mean it to be six weeks since the last time I posted here... guess I've been a bit distracted. The main high point of that period would be my trip to Portland with Rain, which was pretty decent. It did trigger secret VTSFFC marriages somehow... I'm wondering who else got married that I haven't heard about yet.

After a thorough study of the Warhammer 40K miniatures rules, I've figured out that I would probably enjoy the game. A quick check of the budget, and the remaining space in my apartment, tells me that I still won't be getting involved in it :)

Got the BattleBots ready for T-Con... we're only using the two big ones this year due to wear and signal strength issues. Look to your ankles!
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
Gonna be a busy night tonight and tomorrow night - lots to do before Technicon. Last night, [livejournal.com profile] raininva and I assigned stats to all the Badge Wars characters, so progress is being made on that front.

  • Run more laundry tonight.

  • Rain and I need to make sure that the BattleBots are ready and that we have good batteries for them.

  • Burn a CD for Dwight (with the dance cuts he wanted).

  • Contact [livejournal.com profile] trenn to see if he has duplicates of the last two XXXenophile cards I need for a complete set. Offer trades.

  • Build actual badges for all Badge Wars characters and enter assigned stats.

  • Design Badge Wars rules cards.

  • Rebuild my Junkyard Geeks video-capture system to get badge photos for several characters. Still not sure what I'm going to do for art for a few characters such as The Vile One.

That's everything I can think of off the top of my head, though I'm sure there's more.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
People are much more interested in your webcam if you have mammaries.

That's okay, I should put the camcorder away and get a real (cheap) webcam that won't give me a heart attack if it falls off my desk.

Thanks to Technicon's White Elephant auction, I've read nearly the whole Christopher Stasheff "Warlock" series in the space of a week and a half. Good books... "what if a bunch of SCAdians founded a colony world, forgot their technological origins, then developed enough psi to have some magicians lying around?"... but one really shouldn't read 7 of the same author's books in a row. It tends to dull the effect a bit, as I leaned a few months back when I read all the Frank Herbert "Dune" books at once. A bit of advice - don't do that either.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (rabbiteer)
Just did a Rocky Horror showing at TCon 19, thanks to Barb's video room... now it looks like a local club will be running it midnight Friday and Saturday at the Cinema Cafe. $3.50 for tickets, $2 for a prop kit. Tolls of Madness is the link. We might go to the Saturday showing after TCon Dead Dog.
mikailborg: Chris drew this picture of my first Starfleet character for a newsletter cover, years ago. (kriet)
According to [livejournal.com profile] kittykatya, my friend Denise saw me as Magenta at Technicon's showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and commented that I had "legs up to there".

So, basically, all the compliments on appearance I received last weekend came from: a) the white dinner jacket / black slacks combo, or b) the black vinyl maid's outfit with the fishnet hose.

Apparently I need to rethink my wardrobe.

Technicon starts a week from tomorrow, and they've posted an early version of the schedule. I do realize that con schedules are subject to complete revision until late Sunday afternoon, but I couldn't help noticing a few things.

The first thing is that my sweetie and I are involved in one of the Live-Action Role Playing games, and that at least one (possibly both) of the games starts Friday night at 8:00. So we may miss [livejournal.com profile] meiran's Women in SF panel :( I've enjoyed representing the Liberated Male there in the past, and I'd be sorry to miss this one.

Another scheduled LARP event (if it's for the one I'm in) may cause me to miss the first half of the Amateur Film panel, which would be a shame. We don't have a submission this year like we were going to, but it's fun to see what others bring and comment on it.

(2 years ago: "Are you sure you want me as a panelist? I haven't actually been involved in anything since Space Rogues - all I can talk about is the several projects I hope to start work on sometime soon."

"Amateur shmamateur, that makes you a Hollywood professional!")

The person I will be playing in the LARP is a major Russian political figure, I haven't decided whether my accent should be "Boris Badenov" or Connery's "Alexsandr Ramius" (i.e. Moscow by way of Scotland).

This year's midnight discussions include the SW Virginia Spiritual Alliance (a pagan group), Polyamory 101, and a BDSM demonstration / panel. Who says science fiction fans never do anything but watch their Trek videos?

This note is mainly for [livejournal.com profile] kittenchan, but anyone else who wants to take a look and comment may do so. I've only procrastinated about it for appoximately 10 months, but my bio information for Technicon 19 Fan Guest of Honor is ready. You can find it here: Fan GOH Bio. I hope it's still of some use to you!

Now, all I have to do is figure out what my panel will be. The chocolate pudding wrestling is probably out...
