My hometown newspaper made someone's blog! I'm so proud.
Decipher officially launched the WARS game yesterday - I even showed up in the staff pic on the web site. (Green shirt, right side, partially obscured.) The sense of optimism and excitement was very high... unlike all the licensed properties from our past, this is our baby and practically everyone in the building had a hand in it.
I'm really glad I've taken this job.
Edit: There seems to be a problem with the link to the staff pic. Going to "http://warstcg.fanhq.com", clicking on "Articles" in the right-hand sidebar, and clicking on "Happy WARS TCG Release Day From the Gang at Decipher!" should show the pic.

Date: 2004-10-07 10:00 am (UTC)It's a soft sci-fi setting in the 2400s. There are three human factions in the fighting: Earth, which is now run under a corporate structure; Gongen, the nation established on Mars by East Asians fleeing a nuclear disaster which poisoned half the continent; and Mavericks, a lawless frontier of miners, explorers, and criminals from the Belt and the Outer Rim.
Somewhere, somewhen, exist the Shi, an advanced race of surpassing arrogance; and the Quay, their monstrous, genetically-engineered slave laborers. When the Quay, who were a lot smarter than the Shi thought (no Kazon dummies these) formented a successful rebellion, the Shi retaliated by building a nova weapon to wipe out their home system. The Quay caused it to trigger the Shi's sun instead, and in a desperate move, the Shi opened a "quantum rift" ahead of their planet's orbital path.
The quantum rift opens in our system. The Shi drop out, but the rift won't close, and they are followed by a horde of angry Quay. The rift also has a strange "enhancing" effect on certain members of all factions, giving rise to "kizen" who can afffect their surroundings by simple thought or presence. There are plausible reasons for all the factions to conflict or to ally, and the character of the fighting which follows can change in an instant.
I, um... don't want to discuss the physics of all this too much :) But the game's fun to play, and there is a bit more emphasis on skilled play over deck-building in this system.

Date: 2004-10-07 12:02 pm (UTC)If so (and you probably know this already), you guys finished getting out just in time. Days after your move, Hurricane Whichevertheheckthelastonewas came in and, according to the newspaper, damaged 110 units. (I didn't even know it had that many.) Last I heard, most or all of the ground floor people still haven't been able to move back in, and some on higher floors as well.

Date: 2004-10-07 12:19 pm (UTC)Even though Salem Wood is on a hill, the bottom floors of the buildings are half-sunken into the ground, and I heard a lot of people in our complex were flooded out. I saw one guy forlornly hosing off his two PCs when I did the final walk-through last week.
