BBC1 announced yesterday that they are devolping a new series of "Doctor Who", possibly to appear in 2005.

The series is to be written by Russell T. Davies, creator of the original British "Queer As Folk" series, an "absolute Doctor Who fanatic". Despite the worried reactions of a few, a spokesperson for the Beeb did not expect a gay Doctor.

Possible candidates for the title role include Richard E Grant, who is appearing in a BBC internet version of Doctor Who; Paul McGann, who starred in the 1996 Fox version; and Alan Davies, who has been linked to the role in the past.

...and the whole country is agog. Main radio topic. Front page news on the Daily Telegraph (the main story was on Pg 3.) Hysterical. My money is on Davies. It's going to start as a 6 part mini-series, from what I've gathered.

... would be McGann, just because I feel we never got to see what he really might bring to the role, especially with some better scripts. Besides, if they pick someone else, they have two choices - pretend McGann didn't happen and choose an new Eight Doctor, which would kinda suck for McGann; or declare a Ninth Doctor, which is beginning to use up our supply of them :)

(Not that, when he does run out of regenerations, someone can't find an excuse for a Fourteenth, a Fifteenth, et cetera.)

And considering that they do indeed consider him the official Eighth Doctor in the official BBC website's episode guide, I suspect they'd be rather circumspect about changing their minds. Besides, you're right. He seemed promising, despite not exactly getting a great chance to prove himself.

While I've never thought the Fox movie was all that bad, I agree with one review I saw (and now can't remember where) that thought the producers needed to either pay less homage to the past, or more. They kind of hit an uncomfortable medium where they didn't appeal to the hardcore fans, but still put off the newcomers.

But even so, any new Doctor Who (that doesn't suck) will do, whoever they cast.
