Almost no OS installs even include the drivers, by default, necessary for LAN only play anymore.

Well, in D2 you could host and join TCP/IP games. Pretty trivial to set up, tho hijinks could ensue if someone was sneaky enough.

I also suspect they don't want any of the hosting code run on a person's system to lower the amount of hacking.

I think you're spot on, there.

There was a D2 trick where you could use a TCP/IP game to dupe gems, gold, and items without applying a single hack. That sort of behavior won't fly over Battle.Net.
