Friday, 9/2

It was kinda weird to wake up at a Con hotel before the Con's started. Despite an attempt to mark the interesting early-morning panels in the 100-some-page program booklet, I got a slow start on Friday, and blew them off. Instead, I wandered over to the Marriott to see if the dealers' room had opened.

Accidentally, I sat down to rest exactly where the WizKids envoys were meeting. One knew me, and the others reacted well when I dropped [livejournal.com profile] raininva's name. As a freshly-renewed Envoy myself, I was offered the opportunity to help out, but declined, as I needed a "vacation" con over a "working" one.

The Exhibitors' Hall held larger dealers, such as game companies and prop dealers, and the Dealers' room had the smaller stores and such. There was plenty in both I'd have bought with an unlimited budget; several times during the weekend, I had to ask myself, "If you take that gaming book home, will you ever actually use it?"

I wandered back into the lobby, and started to feel a real case of costume envy. There were so many incredible outfits there; I really wish I'd had time to pack more of my stuff. Not that much of it would be competition, but it might have been fun to show off anyway. I won't bother trying to list everything I saw, as that would be boring. It started to get a little depressing, honestly - I could have worn anything I own and not looked out-of-place - and there I stood in jeans and t-shirt. I felt like an arch-conservative.

I went back upstairs for a badly needed nap, as the laps of the hotels in the warmth of Atlanta (and 30,000 fans) were beginning to get to me. Rain called to let me know she was on the final leg of her flight in, so I wandered down to the Food Court joining the Hyatt and Marriott: a tunnel leads to the local metro station, where she'd have been coming in. I misremembered her arrival time, though, and her plane was delayed and the flight's luggage held up, resulting in me spending about 2.5 - 3 hours in that food court. I saw lots more great costumes, though, and recognized the trademark t-shirt and flame-boots of Jennie Breeden, author and artist of webcomic The Devil's Panties. She needed directions to the Hyatt, and I talked briefly to her while taking her there. Very nice lady. I'm sure she thinks I was a borderline stalker.

Rain finally made it to the Con, and we went to the WizKids Envoy Appreciation dinner. Good food, and we learned to play WizKids' first CCG, High Stakes Drifter. As well, Rain got to see something very very very cool at the Dinner which readers of her journal should get to hear about soon.

Tired. Slightly overheated. Rain went to the room WizKids had arranged for her, and I headed back up to mine. Fell into bed and blanked out.

Thursday, 9/1

I couldn't sleep Wednesday night - a combination of a wired state and generally poor sleep lately anyway. I had to get up quite early to get cleaned up, tuck last-minute stuff in the suitcase, and make a trip to the bank. I finally got to meet [livejournal.com profile] thatwhichisgene - a very intelligent, charming fellow, even if we don't agree on Shadowrun and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Gene made good time driving down, and we arrived less than 9 hours out from Norfolk - without speeding! Gas was as high as $7.00 a gallon in Atlanta, so after determining that the rented station wagon's tank was good for about 400 miles, we made sure to gas up about 150 miles out where the prices were more reasonable.

On Thursday evening, the Dragon*Con registration lines are non-existent - I strongly recommend getting one's badge this early. Hall costuming was already starting, though the Con was not to begin until 9:00 the next day. I found David Allen (once of Starfleet, now of Plan Nine Publishing) outside the registration hotel, and chatted for a few minutes before returning to the hotel where I was staying.

Dragon*Con 2005 consisted of three hotels - the Hyatt, home of filking, gaming and half the panels; the Marriott, home of two dealers rooms, the art show, an artists' walk, and more panels; and registration, buried in the Atlanta Hilton. I stayed in the Hyatt. It wasn't as crowded as the horror stories would have had me fear, but the five elevators where always unusably queued. Luckily, our fifth-floor room was easy to walk up and down to and from. (Room 523 - a nice Discordian number.) During the con weekend itself, every room in the Hyatt was occupied by con-goers: one wasn't allowed in the hotel without a Con badge. The street between the Hyatt and the Marriott was blocked off for Con traffic. I began to get the idea that this was a big con.

It was late. I was pooped. I went to bed.

Quote of the day, from websnark.com: "We watch He-Man, Sailor Moon, and other magical girl shows for the stock footage and the monster smiting."

Now I will have Shojo Universe Master He-Man running around in my head all day. "Greyskull Power Sword Transform!!"

Things I am thankful for today: The alarm clock did not wake me from the midst of a dream, so my head actually made it into second gear by the time I had to drive a car. My body kept trying to slip back into reverse, though. Also, it is sunny today and going to be 70 degrees. I need that right now.

Quick review of the Duran Duran concert from the 8th, before I let it slip any further: That was one excellent evening, and I can't thank [livejournal.com profile] stephaniesmom enough for giving me her extra ticket. It was absolutely worth leaving Fairfax at midnight to drive home. They performed every 80's song I liked, not just the hits, and some of it was interestingly remixed a bit for live performance. We even had pretty good seats! The only downside was that my ears were quickly overloaded by the concert speakers, as usual, so it was a lot easier for me to follow the lyrics of the familiar 80's material than the newer stuff. And boy, was I tired by the time I got home!

I've always liked Niven's Laws. I don't slavishly agree with them, but they are an excellent source of topics to ponder.

This leads to the fact that I've just deleted a lengthy rant about SF/fantasy fans who, despite entreaties from their favorite authors that they start thinking for themselves, are still want to be told what to think and what to believe. The only thing we humans got that the rest of the animal kindgom didn't is a more complex brain. It's way past time that we as a race consider trying out some of its higher gears, just to see what happens, you know?

Ok, wow, Technicon report, cool. )

70 degrees and sunny outside today when I can't go out and enjoy it for a couple hours, and it'll be 45 again this weekend when I can. Poo. At least I'll be back in western Virginia and might be able to catch up with some people.

The iPod is so nice. I'd forgotten how good that really-loud on-demand Jean-Michael Jarre could be for my moods.

Robotech.com mentions this week that there will be a Robotech CCG this summer, and that Robotech: Shadow Chronicles is in pre-production as we speak. Yeah... I will believe in them both when I see them, and wait the same period before I trust in the quality of either. The CCG especially - designing an entertaining CCG with staying power isn't the cakewalk a lot of companies think - and they take a *lot* of money to support.

I haven't been real focused the last week or so, and haven't gotten many things done that I'd hoped to. Have to reign myself in on that.

Got back from Marscon Sunday. It was an interesting weekend - all the rooms were taken over by a military group preparing for special training, so all the attendees had to drive back and forth to their hotels. Put a damper on things, that's for sure. I wish I'd remembered that there would be a Rocky Horror show on Saturday night - maybe they'll do it again next year.

Caught up with [livejournal.com profile] kittykatya, [livejournal.com profile] impink, [livejournal.com profile] tzel, Tom & Donna, Jesse, Suzanne, Dave & Jodi, Dwight, Helen, and a bunch of other folk. I got some cheap Discworld paperbacks, and another Steve Jackson card game; for $1, I also bought a memory - the two books of the 1978 D&D Basic set (4th or 5th printing). We also got some Deadlands modules, and [livejournal.com profile] raininva won an auction for a signed uncut sheet of WARS: Nowhere to Hide!

Screen-capture trivia: the men's miniskirt Starfleet uniform from the early Season One episodes of TNG. Strange that this didn't catch on. I mean, can't you just see Worf running around in it?

There was something else on my mind, but it's gone now.

Continuing the saga of the books I've read this year - just finished a re-read of Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. I have to give Asimov credit for, in the space of a few short stories, giving me the feel of observing the fall of a Galactic Empire.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (passing)
The moon demons showed up last night and tried to turn the moon into caramel candy. But I played loud techno music at them and it disrupted their spells and chased them off.

For the first time, Rising Star was an out-of-town con for me! Thanks [livejournal.com profile] shrewlet for crash space. I have to say that the con seemed to go swimmingly from my perspective - every attendee seemed to have a good time, and no staff member melted down in my presence. Nicely done, [livejournal.com profile] rattrap! Next year I'll bring more and cooler Decipher stuff.

I had fun in [livejournal.com profile] nius' skit, though watching the video yesterday, I was struck with a sense of "Did I really do that?" Hey - it got a laugh. Wonderful thing, stage buzz.

I want to thank everyone who's helped us out with the move this weekend... it was a draining pair of days, but would have been frighteningly worse without you all.

Major props to [livejournal.com profile] shrewlet and [livejournal.com profile] rhaps, who stood by us both days and slung a lot of boxes; not to mention that Rhaps' truck-driving experience was absolutely invaluable.

Nick P., Courteney, Nick V., Meg, and [livejournal.com profile] rattrap - you made three flights of stairs seem like not that big a deal! I'm so proud that, at the storage unit, we managed to appall someone with a dirty mind and a sick sense of humor. Only we freaks :)

Tom, Dwight, Dave, and Jodi made unloading go three times as fast as loading did; now we just have to spend until MarsCon unpacking all these boxen.

And special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] silver_hawke, who's put in a lot of work at the Salem end, both at the apartment and providing sanity checks to [livejournal.com profile] raininva. We did have to explain to the Norfolk crowd what you wrote on the boxes you packed. :)

Finally, apologies to [livejournal.com profile] vond and [livejournal.com profile] kittenchan - under other circumstances, we'd have tried to help out. At least we wouldn't have stolen so many potential assistants.

See many of you at Rising Star!

I just need to make about two more trips, and Phase One of the move will be complete. Funny how the new place didn't really seem like it was 'ours' until I could use the bathroom and run the AC :)

Moved more boxes last night - woke up quite sore! I cannot wait until electric power is back on at the new place and I can turn on the air-conditioning! It's 90-100 degrees in that house, even after sunset. Naturally, I'll be finishing the move from my single room before I get power back - so all my toting must be done in the heat, and preferably before dark. On the other hand, at least any folk who help us on the big move from the Salem apartment will have air-conditioning to enjoy.

It's been weird enough living in a rented room with 2-3 roommates I rarely see. For a couple weeks, I'll be living completely alone in a 3-bedroom house. I expect I'll be playing lots of music to add some life to the place. Actually, for the second of those two weeks I'll have the kitty with me - that will help.

Tonight I hope to catch up with Tom. I need to burn a CD of MPEGs for him.

[livejournal.com profile] raininva left to head back home a few hours ago. She got to leave work early Friday, so managed to arrive here in time to see the new house in the light. Turns out I picked out a place she approves of, so that's one less worry for me. Rain's already posted pictures she took Friday, and we're planing where to put stuff - at least we know we'll have room for all our junk. I hope we can start having people over more often now that we have more room.

The weekend felt good, like we squeezed a lot of quality time into 48 hours or so - and this time, I'll see her again in less than a week, so the missing her is a little more tolerable this time out. It was fun talking about all the plans we are making, and guessing about what's to come in the future. The one sour note was the 45-minute wait for lunch at the new Red Robin down here - but the management was very apologetic, and comped our food. Our waitress was polite, but a bit spacy, and I'm not sure English was her primary language; apparently, the kitchen staff was completely out of it. Guess they still have bugs in the system to deal with.

I get to spend the week carrying stuff over to the house a few boxes at a time, trying to sort out what I can do without for a week. (The computer, for example, will be one of the last things moved *grin*.) If anyone would like the new address, e-mail me (that isn't changing) and I'll pass it along. Same with the phone # once I have one!
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
Just dropped off the first load of boxes in the new place.

On second look, I like it even more. There's room for 3 or 4 gaming tables for a party, 1 fewer if we want a PlayStation/DVD group or a chat group. I've tentatively claimed the smallest bedroom for my office, and it's twice the size - I can get back to modeling and miniatures. I've found the closest grocery store, a nearby Taco Bell for Rain, and a nearby lingerie store :p And I drove from work to the house in about 17 minutes, so the commute will actually be a little shorter than my current one.

The garage will only fit one car, but we might be using it for storage at first anyway. I'm not sure where the closest Wal-Mart is either, but I do know where to find a movie theater, a Barnes & Noble, and a Best Buy within about 20-25 minutes. All very important.

Happy me!

The house in which I've been renting a room has three bedrooms - one occupied by the owner and the other two rented out. Shortly after I gave the owner notice, the renter of the third bedroom disappeared with all her stuff while the rest of us were at work. This morning, as I walked by, I saw a new bed in the otherwise empty room - I hope that means that they've found another renter. I felt bad that the owner was losing two monthly rent checks at the same time. He's a nice guy who didn't blink at the notion of my attaching a wireless router to his cable modem :) I'll be dropping off the first load of stuff at the new house tonight.

Feeling better this morning. Went to the pub last night with Tom and Donna and had a pretty good time.

Tom wants me to go up to the new National Air and Space Museum with him on October 10th. I like the idea - I'd hardly want to miss a chance to make a pilgrimage to the STS Enterprise - but October is loading up quick. The 22nd is a weekend trip to Salem for Rising Star, the weekend of the 29th includes a trip to Blacksburg for VTSFFC Halloween, and the weekend of 11/05 is another con I've always wanted to go to.

My poor car. The last months have been really hard on it.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
Quite a weekend! I burned myself out just a teeny bit, but I did have a lot of fun.

Friday morning, I decided I'd get right on the road after work, so I threw a weekend bag into the back seat. I even got to leave work a bit early to take care of an iMac repair at CompUSA. It was a good thing I did leave early, because there were 30-60 minute delays at every tunnel out of Norfolk, and if you're heading north, you pretty much have to take a tunnel.

I'll spare you the next in my ongoing series of traffic rants, because I still showed up at [livejournal.com profile] kittykatya's place just in time for [livejournal.com profile] lekythen and [livejournal.com profile] pulp_tarentino to return from an errand. Spent a couple hours catching up with J.J., whom I haven't seen in 6 years. We've both grown up a bit, and I almost felt that we clicked better as reunited friends than we did when we were dating. So that was quite good.

Friday night and Saturday morning were spent catching up with Alex & Barb & Chris (look, alphabetical). Unfortunately, I had to head off before J.J. came back for her stuff, so I didn't get a final goodbye. It was a good thing I left when I did, because the sky opened up as I left, and I lost another 90 minutes heading back down 95. Luckily, [livejournal.com profile] platypusgirl and [livejournal.com profile] krysturtle were willing to accept a soaked, bedraggled Borg into their home and I had a very good time at their party.

I met many people, some of whom I recognized from con meetings, but few of whom I can remember their names :) The party was fun - lotsa people, good food, nervous kitties. We established that cat toys are far better for amusing small children than small-children toys are, and I have finally seen more than 50% of "The Goonies".

Sunday, I napped a lot. I also tried to track down used copies of the "Riverworld" books - so far, no luck, but there are lots more places to look.

Phew.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (decipher)
Actually, it's my headlight. I meant to get that taken care of last night, but I ran out of energy. I just don't get much done in the evenings now - they're so short. If I go out with friends, that takes care of the evening in one swoop, I go home and go to bed. And I really am having knee problems, I have been all week. Every time I go up a set of stairs is a bit painful, I don't know what I did to myself but I'm ready for it to go away.

I miss getting home at 2 and 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Of course, I don't miss staying at work until midnight, which is what gave me the early days the rest of the week, so I guess it all evens out.

It's raining this morning, as it is over most of the mid-Atlantic states. I like it when it rains. Either a clear, sunny, warm, not too humid day, or a nice steady rain that means business but isn't sheeting down in an effort to get people to build arks. None of this half-way gloom stuff.

Heading back to Salem tonight for the weekend. Thank goodness for audiobooks.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (cartoon)
I have discovered something about this part of Virginia.

If you have to drive anywhere that involves passing through a tunnel, don't be shocked if you're late to your destination.
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (flying_gif)
For the first time since moving here, my weekend return to Salem was marred by traffic delays in both directions, both at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Neither time did I see an evidence of an accident - it was instead as if a claustrophobe had realized too late, "oh, I'm going through a tunnel!" and slowed to 15 mph, causing everyone for 6 miles back to have to slam on their brakes.

However, the Game Day / [livejournal.com profile] raininva's Party / Con Meeting / .Hack Session was lots of fun. Rain proved once again why she's nearly indispensable to Rising Star, I demoed MegaMan, and Nick P. showed me a .Hack//Enemy deck which is no fun to play against :p I also got to say hi to a bunch of Blacksburgites who I don't see as often as I did before the move - I might not be in B-burg again before Rising Star.

Despite reviewers' best efforts, I have figured out the plot twist in The Village from reading reviews, just as I did in The Sixth Sense. The difference is that the deduction made me more interested in watching Willis and Osment, but I know I'm going to give this new movie a pass. Instead, [livejournal.com profile] rattrap nearly talked me into seeing Thunderbirds after all - at the very least, I can sit back and enjoy the CGI rescue vehicles.

Moving to Virginia Beach has certainly improved my concert situation. I saw a Chicago / Earth, Wind, & Fire doubleheader last month, and this month Blondie is playing a show less than 2 blocks from where I work. Yes, I am still all about the 80's - if I can catch Duran Duran on their 2004 tour, I can check off two more bands that I always wanted to see.

Time to go fix another laptop...
