A little timeline here (without many dates, cause I can't remember them):

2005: Apple announces it will be moving the Macintosh over to Intel-based motherboards. Geeks all over the place ask if they can run Windows on them too: Apple says it won't intentionally block the ability, but won't support it either.
Later 2005: We discover that Intel Macs don't use a BIOS to start up their operating system, but something called EFI. Since all versions of Windows use a BIOS, this is a terrible incompatibility, making Windows on a Mac seem unlikely.
2006: Apple releases Intel Macs.
March 2006: Hackers are able to cajole, trick, and otherwise force Windows XP to boot without a BIOS. It doesn't run great, but it runs. Other excited hackers start working on the "runs great" part.
April 2006: Apple, seeing that it's about to run out of time on its little 10.5 surprise, says, "oh okay, we were gonna wait 'til later, but look. Here's Boot Camp. Go ahead and install Windows. It's beta software, so don't expect much." It runs great.

One machine that runs OS X, XP, Linux, BSD, and/or a half-dozen other OSes on command? I'm suddenly a little more interested in a shiny-new Intel Mac...

I'll try this one out, since it was an interesting mental exercise.

Name a CD you own that you think no-one else on your friends list does.
Matsuri Za: Matsuri Daiko (taiko drumming)
Signed by the artists, who were performing at Epcot while [livejournal.com profile] raininva and I were there.

Name a book you own that you think no-one else on your friends list does.
Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
A book on number theory, surrealist art, classical music, computer programming, cellular biology, and more. Not light bedtime reading.

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/whatever that you think no-one else on your friends list does.
"J-Men Forever"
This was a HARD one. Movies are social for me, so nearly every one I have was purchased off a recommendation or was a gift from someone else who already has it. (I assume we're excluding those films which celebrate the inventiveness humanity brings to the act of reproduction.)

Name a place that you have visited that you think no-one else on your friends list has.
The Ghiradelli Chocolate factory in S.F.
My first choice was the National Geographic Society building in D.C., but it's just too close by, and I know too many intellectual types who might have swung by there :)

Name a piece of technology or any sort of tool you own that you think no-one else on your friends list has.
An Apple Newton MessagePad
This one, OTOH, I feel quite confident about!

Been away for a while, again. December was a rough month for me; one of the high points was the sinus infection that kept me feverish, nauseated, and flat on my back for all of Christmas weekend. On the other hand, [livejournal.com profile] raininva trumped her Valentine's Day gift to me with an even more geeky present: a 30GB iPod video. Dang, but that thing is small. It's full of anime and British SF right now, but even with video-on-the-go I never have time to watch anything right now.

Back in April, I barely resisted a rant about SF fans and reviewers. However, this review of the "Starship Troopers" novel pushed the rant to the surface again.

Rant follows... )

Operation "Will You Shut Up That Bloody Computer Fan" is a success, thanks to $25 spent at CompUSA. A little bit of the daily tension of my life has leaked away.

Thanks much to [livejournal.com profile] rhaps and [livejournal.com profile] shrewlet for hosting us this weekend. Turkey Day dinner was tasty and excellent, and my b-day present's going to get a lot of use! Sorry I was a little foggy and dull by the end of the holiday, but massive doses of antihistamine will do that to you.

[livejournal.com profile] vond and [livejournal.com profile] kittenchan, thank you so for inviting us to your wedding. It was lovely, and quite entertaining to see so much of SWVA Fandom in suits, ties, and formal dresses! [livejournal.com profile] vt_andros even captured Rain and myself in all our finery, so I had proof! The list of folks we got to see again would fill a Friends page, but it was a wonderful reason to do so.

Finally, since I've been sitting on it for weeks, here's my results for [livejournal.com profile] rainbowsaber's Which TFC Character quiz... cut to be polite )

Okay, I really have to replace the fan in this power supply. Anyone out there have something from their computer graveyard that would help?

I need Apple part #661-2303 (power supply for a G4 AGP Sawtooth Power Mac). Sometimes the part # 614-0108 can also be seen on said power supply.

Of course, all I really need from it is the internal fan. If someone has a dead supply with a working fan, or already has the fan lying loose and still functional, that would be just fine too :)
mikailborg: I can't even remember what event I was attending, but I must have been taking it seriously. (Default)
For the past year, the fan in the power supply on my G4 has been making a grinding noise. This week it got loud enough to drive [livejournal.com profile] raininva to distraction, so she asked me to please fix it. (Frankly, I was sick of listening to it too.) Replacement Apple power supplies run $130 - $230 on the web, so that was right out. Besides, it was only the fan itself.

I pulled the power supply out, then the fan, and took it to CompUSA. They had a wide variety of fans, but although several were exactly the right size and shape, they had three-pin connectors instead of two-pin, and the amperage ratings were different, which worried me. The technical guy there strongly suggested I just get a new power supply. (Fans are $10, power supplies $40. Hmm.)

Apparently, my G4 can use a standard ATX power supply, but the motherboard connector pinouts are slightly different, and I'd have to splice some wires (and me without a soldering iron or, indeed, much soldering practice). Also, my power supply is 237 watt. I think I can use a 250 safely, but I don't know that.

On a better note, we played Plague and Pestilence and Dork Tower at Card Night last night, and both games went over well. Dork Tower even came with a free 8-page mini version of Dork FRAG, which means that by taking advantage of the Dragon*Con sale, I got two games for the price of half of one. Not bad!

Soooo tired.

Damn.

Turns out all the web rumors were true. All Macintoshes will be Intel-based by the end of 2007. This is from Steve Jobs' own lips at WWDC.

Just checked the calendar... it's not April 1st.

My job's just gotten more interesting.

I got a forwarded email about ip addesses today. The subject line was "fwip". This is brought to you by the Easily Amused Association.

I saw the screener for the new Doctor Who this week, and really liked it. The episode was fun, and avoided Fox's mistake of trying to cram too much continuity down a new viewer's throat - though there were a few tips of the hat to we long-term fans. I was going to post some specific opinions behind a spoiler cut, but I can wait until after Technicon to do that. I imagine that TV torrent sites are getting more queries on "rose" right now than the last time "The Bachelor" got pre-empted. I'm looking forward to more!

I've been spending a lot of time lately reading the archives at http://www.randi.org/ - some of the anecdotes are pretty wild. I can't honestly say I'm likely to attain the level of skepticism displayed by Randi or the late Carl Sagan, but I did work out at an early age that there are a lot of charlatans out there waiting to take advantage of anyone they can. I'm a tongue-in-cheek adherent of Discordianism partially because it doesn't want my money and would be disappointed in me if I started doing everything it told me to :)

Part of the fun of being Tech Support here is getting to play legitimately with the Developer Preview of OS X 10.4. Shiny beta plaything!

It's quite trying to have to find 15-year-old install floppies so one can access archived stuff in an obsolete format. (And find a floppy drive while I'm at it.)

I should just thank Eris that the old software even runs. I need one of those Federation tricorders that can access 1000-year-old alien logs in 20-30 seconds of thinking.

Yes, Virginia, you can fit a futon, mattress and all, in a Hyundai Elantra.

Spent my first night in the new house. The room I've slept in for the past three months had crappy A/C, but this morning I woke up a bit chilly - [livejournal.com profile] raininva will be pleased. Glad I found my bathrobe in the move. This week I start unpacking what I have with me of my office, which is little more than a mess of boxes at the moment. The commute is easier (it seems so far) than the previous commute, which is nice. I have to find out why the smoke alarm emits random stifled beeps all day, but last night I was far too tired to notice.

Had the sense to take some ibuprofen before bed, so didn't wake up too sore.

So, it seems a Mac shareware developer released an app which, if you enter a pirated serial number, erases your Home directory - your system and applications survive, but every personal document, music file, movie, e-mail, website, password, etc. is GONE. So, is this just desserts for pirates, or equivalent to burning someone's house down for punching you in the nose? Discuss.

Yesterday started good. I didn't feel well when I got up in the morning, but I never feel well if I get up before 10am, so I didn't think twice about it. In the first half of my work day, I completed the resurrection of a dead Titanium PowerBook with a broken hinge and sheared display wires, which was nice bit of ego-boost.

By lunchtime, I realized that my throat was super sore, and I was pretty dehydrated. I took a break and went to the tiny pharmacy a couple doors down, and came back to work. My nose had started running too, so I grabbed some tissues.

By mid-afternoon, there was no doubt that I was sick. I was coughing, blowing my nose, had a nice headache and serious nausea. Throw in some light-headedness and chills, and you know I was really enjoying myself by that time. I had to reassemble an iBook in that condition, too, which as I've mentioned has 50 screws in about 10 different sizes. Literally. I figure it was sinus brought on mostly by over-exerting myself over the weekend and the crappy weather on Saturday.

Finally, work was over, but there was an event I had to attend yesterday evening, to insure I'd be properly prepared for something else happening Saturday. I'd have blown it off, but that would have screwed up the next month's worth of planning. Only problem? No one had sent me directions yet.

I drove to two places where this group had met before, but they weren't at either place. In desperation, I did my first bit of intentional wardriving: cruising slowly around the residential neighborhood seeing if my iPaq would pick up an open wireless access point. I actually found one, and confirmed that no one had sent me e-mail, so I gave up and headed home.

The good side of that was that I really shouldn't have been around all those other people when I was sick, and I was able to head to bed early. On top of that, I got home in time to catch a phone call from [livejournal.com profile] raininva before I dropped off, and we talked for a good long time, which cheered me up a lot. On the other hand, my upcoming plans are trashed.

I'm still not well, but I'm better than I was yesterday. I can function, and my throat and stomach are mostly okay. If my nose and head would follow suit, I'd be fine. I might even go down to see Tom at the pub tonight.

*snort*

Over GenCon weekend, we released two Demo Deck pdf files and a rules sheet for the new Wars game. Certain artistic types may find this useful as reference material, others may want to try out the game. Michael Stackpole's first Wars-universe fiction is posted too.

I am reassembling the broken display hinges of a Titanium PowerBook. This is clearly not something Apple meant me to do.

Here's a website that brings back some old Mac gaming memories.

Warning: you might need an emulator to run some of thse titles. Even a newer Mac may need to emulate an older one.

Posting from the handheld, since the computer's back in Virginia Beach. Rain's off at Origins, and I'm got a kitty magnetically attached to my lap - she hasn't seen me in two weeks, nor Rain for a couple days. Boy did she cuss me when I walked in.

Brought some card sets up for this evening. I'll probably get cleaned up and leave for Blacksburg before long. More driving. Good thing my car's comfy as they go.

It's interesting trying to read webcomics on the screen of a handheld. I wonder if I could manage to save up for an nice eBay laptop by Xmas, one I can shoehorn OS X onto.

Kitty's purring.

Two interesting tidbits of geek stuff crossed my desk this morning; first, there's finally a really nice, configurable, Matrix code screensaver for Mac OS X. Too bad all my machines migrated to SETI@home some time ago. Second, it looks like the new AIM for Windows beta has early video chat support, and may soon be compatible with Apple's iChat AV. That would be wonderful news, seeing as the video chat support in Yahoo! Messenger for OS X is... weak.

I'm now the navigator for [livejournal.com profile] kittykatya's pirate crew, yarrgh! I wonder if Tom Monaghan still has the letters of marque issued to the SS MacKeigh by the court of Riversmeet (I think)?

Christmas was very good, and in my case, spread over all of December. I got to see a lot of people who are important to me, and yes, I got a lot of neat stuff - to deny that I enjoy people giving me gifts would be hypocrisy of a high order. I know some people who feel that it's better to spend the whole year being good to their fellow humans, rather than to concentrate it on a single season; I can't argue with the sentiment, but I feel that we always need times of special celebration.

Still don't know for sure what I'm doing New Year's - we have several plans, but they all depend on things out of our control. I had hoped to finally meet [livejournal.com profile] subbes face-to-face this week, but I just don't know right now.

Hako!

I love the old Ray Dunakin World Builder games. Sure, the graphics are quaint, antiquated, but the puzzles are fun, and the bad jokes just make it better. (Actually, the antiquated graphics add a bit to the charm!) Legend has it that Myst was inspired by games like these.

Unfortunately, the sounds don't want to work right in Power Macintoshes. That's why I was installing a System 6 emulator for OS X the other day.

SoftMac and Basilisk II can both emulate older Macs under Windows and Linux, respectively. Users of other systems probably know more about available emulators than I would.

Free games rule!

Happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] meiran. My calendar said your birthday was on the 27th... on the other hand, it also said you were born in 2080, so it obviously needed a bit of correcting.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vond, [livejournal.com profile] jdunson, [livejournal.com profile] corin_wolfkin, and the Carilion crowd for showing up at Rain's party, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yubbie for the cake on Saturday :)

It was a heck of a weekend - I got a little personal time in after work Thursday, but Thursday evening I drove some stuff over to Rain's gaming venue, and finished the evening with dinner at the Tanglewood Macado's... Friday I went from work, to bill-paying, to home to pack for Rain's party, to Anne-Marie's for the actual party *puff-puff, whew*.

Saturday, over to VTSFFC click-base day, where I discovered (by running demos) that the Shadowrun Duels system is fast-paced and fun, and does lend itself to use in actual RPG situations. OTOH, Benny and [livejournal.com profile] jdunson both found out a click-base truism: though two sides may be even in points, the side with more figures has a noticeable advantage.

Saturday night was dinner at the Blacksburg Macado's, where we plotted to make everyone at [livejournal.com profile] nius' high school reunion jumpy and confused, and we discussed the details of wirelessly networking sex toys.

Sunday, I had a little personal time, but it got divided between a long-distance phone call, laundry and dishes, and installing MacOS 6 on my G4. (Really - and I had a good reason.) After that, dinner with [livejournal.com profile] rattrap, [livejournal.com profile] corin_wolfkin, and Rockbender. Back home, to a couple hours of private time with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] raininva, and finally to bed.

And after all that - I couldn't sleep last night!

My boss wants to sell his Apple G4 "Titanium" PowerBook and upgrade to a faster desktop. This is one of the original G4 PowerBooks with a 400 MHz Motorola PowerPC, 10 GB hard disk, slot-loading CD/DVD drive, and an 8 Meg ATI Rage Mobility 128 video card. Memory has been upgraded to 384 Megs. It will cheerfully run MacOS 9.1 through the current MacOS X 10.2.6.

Complete stats may be found here:

He's asking $1200 for it. If there's any interest, drop me a note!

Yes, I too would like to have a 3-GHz Mac on my desktop for $899. However, despite the fact that OS X is quite capable of running on an Intel chip, here's a nicely thought-out editorial on why that won't happen soon.

And for those on my friends list who still need a PlayStation 2, Deals On The Web has a Sony refurbed PS2 with a subwoofer tossed in for $129. That's only $30 bucks more than a PS1 if I remember correctly.

Well, I'm actually feeling a bit accomplished these days. This weekend, I shook the rust from my joints and did some serious database programming, teaching it how to build (static) webpages for manual upload. Today, I forced our server (which recently graduated from peer-to-peer file sharer to real server) to take an OS upgrade that it supposedly can't, getting better networking and filesystem performance from it.

You had to 'force' it? )

Has anyone ever noticed that when a Jedi fights a lightsaber-wielding villain, things usually don't go well for the Jedi?
Ep.4 - Obi-Wan vs. Vader, ends with Obi-Wan dead.
Ep.5 - Luke vs. Vader, ends with everyone calling Luke 'lefty.'
Ep.6 - Luke vs. Vader, ends with Luke almost succumbing to the dark side, then lying on the floor sucking Sidious' energy bolts.
Ep.1 - Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan vs. Maul, ends with Qui-Gon dead and Obi-Wan having to train Anakin. (Yeah, that all works out well.)
Ep.2 - Obi-Wan & Anakin & Yoda vs. Dooku, ends with 'lefty' Anakin, injured Obi-Wan, defeated Yoda, and Dooku flying off in his ship cackling, pausing only briefly to skywrite "Surrender Dorothy" on his way out.

Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but if I were a Jedi, and saw the other guy light up a laser blade, I'd be pretty depressed about how things were going.
