Usagi Yojimbo did have a pet tokage (lizard), Spot for a while, and the Panda, Lord Noriyuki has a pet dog. According to Stan, people in his world just know the difference between intelligent and non-intelligent animals-- for instance, you might see an intelligent horse riding a non-intelligent one.
