Interstella 5555 is indeed good stuff, and it's pure Matsumoto through and through. Seems that Daft Punk, being Matsumoto fans, approached him about doing a joint project, and always enjoying experimentation, Matsumoto-sama agreed.
What makes it more interesting is that the members of Daft Punk don't speak a word of Japanese, nor does Matsumoto their language. They did the whole thing through some very good interpreters.
