Unfortunately, the costuming field in fandom has a fair proportion of them. They used to make me angry... now I just pity them. (And mock them a bit.) I got tired of playing with a group of people because of comments like that. And now, unlike then, I have no problem telling anyone where to shove it. And I can do it with it with a level of grace and tact.
Costume because you want to. Wear it because you like it.
