I'll Smile If I Want To

Thinking about something [livejournal.com profile] twistdfateangel posted:

There are a lot of people out there who can't have a good time unless someone else is having a bad one. In online gaming, we call them "griefers".

Unfortunately, the costuming field in fandom has a fair proportion of them. They used to make me angry... now I just pity them. (And mock them a bit.) I'll wear what I damn well want to wear to the con, and if it's not quite period, or if the fabric color's a little off, or if I've taken parts of the outfit from entirely different fictions: screw it. I'm having fun. Too bad, so sad that they're not.

Schadenfreude.

And if anyone ranks on your black vinyl dress or any of your other fabulous outfits, I'll gladly help you kick their asses. :)

I'm thinking of bringing a couple interesting outfits, yes. It's the last Technicon, right? You're welcome to give me your opinion :)

Awesome! It's always great to have backup.

You know, folks like you who understand what I'm about with all this make it all the more fun to do!

If you're claiming to be "historically accurate" and rubbing it in people's faces, I'll happily bust you down a notch.

If you're wearing a costume, all that matters is that YOU like what you are wearing and having fun (and don't violate any indecent exposure laws or the law of spandex. :)

YAY!
(applause)

I got tired of playing with a group of people because of comments like that. And now, unlike then, I have no problem telling anyone where to shove it. And I can do it with it with a level of grace and tact.

Costume because you want to. Wear it because you like it.

I don't 'costume' because I'll never live up to being whatever character it is.

I did do a 'clockwork orange' derivative outfit once that was mostly about a gray top hat. totally got away with it, but also I have tits, and there may be leeway there.

[identity profile] mikailborg.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Tits are frankly valuable currency, at least in fandom. That's not likely to change soon :)

I only have one costume that goes with a specific character, and the fact that I look nothing like that character is intentional. It's a meta thing, and at least no one can tell me I got it wrong... that's pretty obvious.

The rest of the time, I costume for a theme, not for a person. Starfleet uniforms, SCAdian garb, or period SF wear: that way, I get the outfit without the comparisons. At this point in my life, the person I look most like is Edmund Blackadder, and while I intend to costume as him someday, it means I can't really do many leading men.

I think my best-known 'authenticity' chain-yank was the con at which I wore a ST: Next Gen uniform with a Babylon 5 comlink where the communicator pin ought to be. That actually pissed off a couple of people. *eyeroll*

See, I would find that really funny. Next time, really piss people off and wear a psicorps badge instead. :)
